Exploring New Possibilities in Cement Production: A Study on Chryso’s EnviroAdd® Cement Activators
At Chryso, we lead the way to drive sustainable cement innovation and push boundaries at every step of the process.
From raw materials to finished cement, we harness expertise and state-of-the-art chemistry to create new benchmarks for sustainability and performance.
Chryso collaborated with a renowned, independant laboratory in Germany, to assess the impact of Chryso’s next-generation activators, EnviroAdd® on Portland-composite cement. The study revealed a remarkable increase in compressive strength, with significant clinker substitution and enhanced mill efficiency.
The goal of this study was to highlight impressive performance benefits of Chryso next generation activators on a laboratory scale production of CEM II/C-M(S-LL) with a cement composition comprising of clinker with 30% Slag and 20% Limestone. All components were preselected and characterized by the third-party laboratory, and Chryso provided three innovative activators from the EnviroAdd® range, which were specifically designed to meet cement performance targets for a given treatment cost.
Unmatched Compressive Strengths Improvement
In this study, the tested activators gave powerful strength enhancement compared to “conventional” grinding aid on one of the lowest “low CO2 binders” such as CEM II/C-M (S-LL). The strengths were increased up to 7,5 Mpa at 28 days and 5,5 Mpa at 1 day, and it can benefit to clinker factor reduction by 7% in this case or to increase the mill efficiency leading to energy savings or both.
Key Outcomes
Unmatched Strength Improvement
EnviroAdd® activators increased compressive strength of up to +17% at 28 days and up to 84% at 1 day compared to traditional grinding aids.
Driving Sustainable Solutions
A 7% clinker substitution, reducing CO2 emissions and overall cement production costs. Maximized use and performance of supplementary cementitious materials (SCM)
Supporting Our Customers in Developing Low-CO₂ Binders
Introduction of novel cement types such as CEM II/C-M(S-LL) with as low as 47% of clinker content
This graph illustrates how the activators enhance the hydration rate, correlated with the strength evolution
At 1 day, the range of EnviroAdd® activators (1, 2 and 3 formulas) were able to increase the compressive strength by 5,5 Mpa, from 63% to 84% compared to the traditional grinding aid TAVERO.
At 2 days the strengths have been uniformly improved among the three activators, with a gain of 4 MPa; 26% compared to the reference.
At 28 days, EnviroAdd 001 to EnviroAdd 003 provided significant higher strength i.e, 6 – 7,5 MPa higher.
